"Close-Up: Seasoning a Traditional Stew with Kitarasa and Beans"

This  close-up, taken in August 2024 in Mangulwa, Tanzania, features a farmer from the Kitarasa Farmers group seasoning a traditional stew made with Kitarasa bananas and local beans. Kitarasa, an indigenous banana rich in fiber and minerals, is low in sugar and highly valued for its health benefits. After witnessing the elders in their Kilimanjaro community regain strength from this nutritious food, the farmers began cultivating it more extensively, recognizing its superior benefits over market-promoted hybrids.

Dedicated to preserving their culinary heritage, these farmers use agroecological principles to keep traditional foods alive for their community. The image captures the essence of authentic African cooking, with the farmer in a bright yellow patterned dress preparing the stew on the floor over an open fire. This photograph is perfect for those passionate about African food culture, sustainability, and the vibrant traditions that connect people to the land.

  • For every photo sold from this series, 10% of the profits will directly support the farmers' group I had the honor of working with in Tanzania for BODY&SOIL. These funds help their initiative to grow regeneratively, nurture their soils, and celebrate their food heritage.
