Let me introduce myself
I’m Eva Maria Schiffer — a German holistic nutrition expert, creative storyteller, and founder of BODY&SOIL in Uganda. For more than a decade, my work has lived at the intersection of food, culture, and community, shaped by deep curiosity, long-term presence, and a strong drive to find solutions that truly work for people on the ground.
I began my professional journey as a photographer, working for companies and magazines in Germany. Seeking deeper purpose, I traveled through more than ten African countries to document food cultures and everyday stories. This work culminated in my book Eating with Africa (DK), which grew out of cooking in people’s homes from all walks of life. These years as a journalist taught me to listen, observe, and learn — not from reports, but directly from people.
My curiosity and constant desire to learn continue to guide my work. I collaborate closely with local partners, practitioners, and specialists, believing that meaningful solutions can only emerge from within communities themselves. Rather than importing ideas, I focus on understanding what already exists — and how it can be strengthened, adapted, and shared.
Alongside this, I worked in brand development and community-based research, including with the Kara-Tunga Foundation in Uganda, supporting initiatives that translate cultural knowledge into authentic brands and narratives. These experiences laid the foundation for founding BODY&SOIL — a long-term initiative and partnership with RUCID Organic College, rooted in regenerative agriculture, nutrition from soil to plate, and locally driven food systems. Our goal is to transform food systems that harm soils and people, while resisting the flood of imported goods on local markets. That’s why I believe only holistic approaches — though slower and less easily captured in tables can create change.
With BODY&SOIL, I moved from documenting systems to actively shaping them. My approach is adaptive and collaborative: allowing processes to unfold organically while providing structure, guidance, and direction. Together with a strong local team, we don’t arrive with fixed answers — instead, we explore possibilities, shift perspectives, and connect the dots between soil, nutrition, culture, and markets.
BODY&SOIL is my “number one baby,” but I also want to support organisations and founders working in food and nutrition across Africa as a strategic guide and connector. My practical holistic expertise gives me a unique touch, and I aim to help as many people as I can through the knowledge and experience I’ve gained over years of hands-on work spanning two continents. I collaborate closely with trusted agricultural and technical experts, always keeping the bigger picture in focus. My role is to translate complex realities into practical pathways — solutions that are lived, tested, and meaningful, not just written in reports.
At the core of my work is the belief that real change takes time — it doesn’t come from long project meetings decided by outsiders, but through trust and long-term collaboration with the people who need and want the change. And above all, I believe that everything is figureoutable.
